A Beautiful Summer Scene on a Rainy December Day
One of our last advertising campaigns with Coca-Cola was with their Dasani and Dasani Sparkling brands. We were photographing for a campaign that would launch in the summer, but we were shooting in December.
The image board they sent us was bright, sunny, and filled with concepts like a soccer mom on the sideline and a family headed out for a fun summer day. We only had about two weeks to produce the photoshoot and the entire time we kept checking the weather because we all know Atlanta weather can be bipolar. And, of course, it rained both days we photographed this campaign.
On day one we were inside an East Atlanta home. Luckily we shot a good bit in the kitchen, and when the rain calmed down we would shoot the scenes in the car and in the yard that we made seem like a soccer sideline. It was a tight space, but it made our team bond! On day two we photographed at a large workspace with enough space for our team to stay dry. Well at least everyone other than Jason and the photo assistants were able to hide out inside.
They were standing outside in the rain building scrims to block the rain and setting up lights to create fake sunlight. Huge shout out to our awesome team members who will quite literally do it for the gram, or shall we say, do it for the Hales of it.
Our pro tips for creating a sunny day on a rainy one:
1- Get a team that is awesome
2- Use backlights to create the effect of sunlight
3- Build a scrim to block the rain from hitting the product and the talent
4- Have umbrellas on hand and covers for your equipment
5- Hire us. ;)
While photographing in the rain isn’t ideal, we love a challenge and take pride that we will do whatever it takes to get “the” shot and still have fun doing it.
Pro tip: Need wind, but there isn’t any? Get yourself a leaf blower!!! Big shout out to the models who had a leaf blower blown in their faces for the shot.
